I really like this bread guide for cutting fresh bread. Its easy to use although there is only one slice size which is about medium to thick. The bread container that comes with it is ok. Good for the price.

Having bought a breadmaker for the first rime, we realised that we needed all of the bits to go with the new ‘hobby’ and, for my wife, that included a guide so that the soft new loaf didn’t get mangled in the slicing. Actually, our electric meat slicer cuts the bread well but I like thicker slices than that machine can manage when I have toast. In looking for a slicing guide, I can across this plastic bread bin that happened to come with a slicing guide for free and, as it was only a bit more expensive than the guide alone, I ordered that.

The bin is quite sturdy and it does, as advertised, keep the bread very well indeed, with the small ventilation holes preventing the bread from ‘sweating’. The fact that the bin is telescopic helps as, when the loaf decreases in size as you eat it, the storage gets smaller. And because the slicing guide fits inside the bin, the whole thing is as compact as it can be.

Here’s a science fact for those who’ve never heard it before. Most things keep for longer if stored in a ‘fridge. Except for bread! It just so happens that the perfect temperature at which the bacteria in bread causes mold to form is exactly the same temperature as that inside your ‘fridge, so keeping your bread in the ‘fridge will shorten its shelf life, not lengthen it. Bread will stay fresh in this plastic bread bin for several days (so long as you don’t put the whole bin into the ‘fridge!).

The slicing guide is a little bit on the flimsy side but it works very well indeed. If it’s a large loaf that you’re cutting, then you will find yourself wishing for a longer bread knife as only 60mm or so of blade protrudes through the guide, meaning that the cutting action is lots of short strokes rather than a few long strokes.

This kit may just be plastic but it does the job intended and I consider it good value for money because of that. It’s nice to get something that does exactly what it’s supposed to do.

I’ve had this for a few months now and it’s honestly been such a brilliant purchase. Every slice is perfect. It’s easy to use. Stores bread easily and has a vent so bread doesn’t get moist.
So glad I purchased this, what I thought would be a redundant kitchen accessory.
